Al-Taḥrīm

This chapter begins by referring to what transpired between the Prophet and some of his wives in the story about forbidding (taḥrīm). It admonishes the Prophet for forbidding himself what God had allowed him in order to please some of his wives, thereby implying criticism of those wives and vindicating the Prophet, as the context of the verses indicates.

Then, it tells the faithful to guard themselves from divine punishment—the fire whose fuel is men and stones. They will only be recompensed for their deeds. None will be saved from it except the Prophet and those who believed along with him. Then it tells the Prophet to fight against those who reject faith (the kuffār) and the hypocrites.

The chapter concludes by presenting examples of faithless and faithful women. The context indicates that the chapter is doubtlessly Medinan.

This is the ʿAllāmah's introduction to the sūrah, from the opening of the commentary.
