Circumstances of Revelation
Place: Mecca or Medina; the sūrah's content is compatible with either. → Introduction
The occasion: It is said that revelation to the Prophet ceased for a while, until people began to say, "His Lord has abandoned him," and the sūrah was revealed to gladden him. Al-Mizan: the link between this interruption of revelation and the imagery of day and night in the opening oaths should be evident. → Introduction · Commentary on verse 3
Verse 5: Jābir b. ʿAbd-Allāh reports that the Prophet came to Fāṭimah as she ground flour in a coarse garment of camel hair and told her to bear the bitterness of this world for the bliss of the hereafter; then and your Lord shall soon give you such that you shall be pleased was revealed. Al-Mizan: this means either that the verse was revealed separately, after the rest of the sūrah, and appended to it, or that it was revealed a second time on its own. → Narrations
