Circumstances of Revelation

Place: Mecca, as the sūrah's content shows. → Introduction

Verses 1–2, the occasion: Ibn ʿAbbās reports that the Prophet neither recited to the jinn nor saw them. When the devils were blocked from the news of heaven and pelted with meteors, a group of them searching the land passed by ʿUkāẓ Market as the Prophet was leading the morning prayer with his Companions; they heard the Qur'an, believed, and told their people, and God revealed Say: "It is revealed unto me that a company of the jinn gave ear." Other narrations differ: Ibn Masʿūd reports that on "the night of the jinn" the Prophet went off alone and recited the Qur'an to them, and Imam ʿAlī reports that the jinn met him at Baṭn al-Nakhl and pledged allegiance to him. → Narrations

Is this the group of ? Tafsīr al-Qummī gives a similar account under that makes those verses concern the same group of jinn. Al-Mizan: this is incompatible with the apparent sense of the two passages. The words of the jinn in Sūrah al-Aḥqāf () suggest they already believed in Moses and had accepted the Torah, while the jinn of this sūrah were polytheists who denied prophethood altogether; so they appear to be two different groups. → Narrations

A summary prepared from Tafsīr al-Mīzān: where and when the sūrah was revealed, and the occasions reported for its verses, with the ʿAllāmah's view of them. Each point links to the full discussion.
