Circumstances of Revelation
Place: Mecca. The context and tone of the verses attest to it. → Introduction
Verse 42 (Do they seek to outmaneuver?): Some commentators took this as a reference to the decision of the notables of Quraysh in Dār al-Nadwah, shortly before the Emigration, to assassinate the Prophet, and to their being slain at Badr; on this reading the verse would be a prophecy, revealed long before these events. Al-Mizan: this interpretation does not match the context and tone of this section. → Commentary on verse 42
Verses 45 and 47: Some took their day on which they will be thunderstruck (verse 45), and the punishment besides that (verse 47), as references to the Battle of Badr. Al-Mizan: the first is an unlikely reading, and the ending of verse 47 does not accord with it; verse 47 may refer to the punishment of the grave. → Commentary on verse 45 · Commentary on verse 47
