Circumstances of Revelation

Place: Mecca, judging by the tone and content of its verses. Some commentators made an exception for verse 14 (Say to the faithful to forgive…); Al-Mizan: nothing attests to their opinion. → Introduction

Verse 14: Al-Mizan's view: the verse was revealed in Mecca, in keeping with the preceding verses. When the believers met those who mocked God's signs and insulted the Prophet, they could not keep from arguing with them, so God told the Prophet to bid them to forgive and disregard them, since God would repay them in full. → Commentary on verse 14

Verse 23: Tafsīr al-Qummī says Have you seen him who has taken to be his god his desire was revealed about the Quraysh, who would worship whatever they desired. Ibn ʿAbbās reports that it was revealed about the Arab who would worship a stone, then cast it aside for a better one when he found it. → Narrations

A summary prepared from Tafsīr al-Mīzān: where and when the sūrah was revealed, and the occasions reported for its verses, with the ʿAllāmah's view of them. Each point links to the full discussion.
