Circumstances of Revelation

Place: Mecca, as the content of its verses indicates. Some exegetes exclude two verses, 29 and 32, from this; al-Mizan notes that their content does not make clear whether they were revealed in Mecca or Medina. → Introduction

Verse 10: Some exegetes say the plots of the nefarious refer specifically to what Quraysh did against the Prophet at Dār al-Nadwah and on similar occasions, seeking to capture, exile or kill him, which God turned back on them at Badr. Al-Mizan: a good view, but the verse is general. → Commentary on verse 10

Verse 22: Ibn ʿAbbās is reported to say that you cannot make those in the grave hear was revealed after the Prophet addressed the slain polytheists at Badr and said his Companions heard him no better than the dead did. Al-Mizan's view: the narration has clear signs of fabrication. The Prophet's station is too high for him to speak without knowledge from his Lord and then be corrected by a verse; the verse as quoted combines with ; and the context shows the verse is Meccan. → Narrations
