Circumstances of Revelation

Place and time: Al-Mizan does not discuss where or when Sūrah al-Naml was revealed.

The audience: Al-Mizan: the verses before verse 82 concern the polytheists of the Prophet's time, specifically Quraysh in Mecca, who were most hostile to him; they are the audience addressed at the time of revelation, but the address extends to all of the Prophet's nation. This city in verse 91 is Mecca. → Commentary on verse 82 · Commentary on verse 91

Verse 59: Tafsīr al-Qummī says His servants whom He has chosen are the family of Muḥammad; Ibn ʿAbbās says they are Muḥammad's Companions; Sufyān al-Thawrī says the verse was revealed exclusively about the Companions. Al-Mizan's view: the context shows they are the prophets mentioned in the preceding verses; the first two reports, if authentic, extend the verse to further applications, and the verse was not revealed about the Companions at all, let alone exclusively. → Narrations

Verse 62: Imam al-Ṣādiq is reported to have said that He Who answers the distressed one when he calls upon Him was revealed about the Qāʾim of Muḥammad's family. Al-Mizan: this is an application; the verse itself is more general. → Narrations

Verse 72: Some part of that which you seek to hasten on is worldly punishment before the hereafter; perhaps, as some have suggested, it refers to the polytheists' punishment at Badr. → Commentary on verse 72
